At every turn, we’re encouraged to set goals—about finances, health, family life, you name it. But when faced with goal-setting for our events, we often approach the task in reverse.
In my early days as a meeting planner, I was given the challenge of setting goals and creating themes for youth events. My approach was as follows:
1) Look for an eye-catching piece of clip art. (this was long before the days of Internet art searches.)
2) & ...

How Valuable Is Your Event? |

I jiust finished reading an article about how different cities place a value on your event. While there are various formulas, and it was apparent that no two are alike, there's not doubt that your event's value is an important piece of information. It's one that you need, not only to know, but also to know how to use it.
During our recent event, Rejuvenate Marketplace, guest speaker, Jennifer Brown, presented a session about How Hotel's Value Your Business. There's quite a process involved in determining if your event is worthy of consideration for a venue, based on a number of factors.
In short, every event has value, but not every event has value to every location.
It would serve us all to learn the processes involved in assigning a value to our events and how potential venues determine their interest in host those events?
Have you been surprised, either pleasantly or surprisingly, to learn the value or lack of ...

During travels last spring and summer, I had the opportunity to sit face-to-face with numerous faith-based planners. One of the questions posed to them was always a recollection of their greatest horror story.
So now, I pose the question to you, what's your horror story? Every planner has one. Some are entertaining, some are of the variety that, looking back, you laugh now - but you certainly didn't then.
What's yours?

What Cranks Your Motor? |

I have a friend in Nashville who, on an irregular basis, poses the following question: “What cranks your motor?” His goal in asking is to create a thought process that makes me question whether I’m truly doing what I’m supposed to be doing. We’ve all been stuck in a job that was just that—a job! We’ve all worked in some field that was less than desirable. But then, hopefully, we occasionally find ourselves in that perfect fit, where our skill set, attainable goals, an ideal work environment, time to dream, develop and move forward—emotionally, professionally, relationally, and spiritually—all work in harmony and unity.
What deters you from achieving that dream job or dream event? Perhaps the pressures of deadlines, stress, details, and unre ...

Does the Presence of a Union Affect Your Site Selection? |

I read an article today about a potential strike of the Casino and Laundry Workers Union in Las Vegas. The union has promised an $80 million strike fund to help support the process. Whether or not you meet in Las Vegas, no doubt you've utilized or at least considered cities where a union has a presence. Does the presence of a union, any union, sway your decision? Can your organization afford the additional fees or do you just consider it the cost of doing business and budget for it? Or do you high-tail it out of town and look for an alternative, union-free city? My biggest union experience occured during my early years and was certainly a learning experience, which I'll save for a future post. But I think others could certainly learn for the collective experience and errors we've all made. Do you have something to share???
